Description

Architecture influences our lives and values, both from an individual and collective perspective. It is an essential ingredient of most tourism experiences. But by its paradoxical situation of framing the holiday experience and being a tourism attraction by itself architecture is a challenging endeavor to work with.

In order to understand the complex relationship between architecture and tourism, we propose a coursework that provides basics in spatial literacy and develops competence for informed decision-making. Thereby it takes a user perspective on the context of buildings and the exploration of space and continues on strategic questions concerning location choice. The course focuses on strategic issues like guiding tourists with and through architecture and the problems of congestion and sustainability in attractive urban contexts.

Substantial part of the course is practical fieldwork. The framework will be given in form of compacted version of lectures, introducing the notion ‘ex-formation’ and fieldwork. The course is going to use a wide range of examples and illustrations in order to create a discussions basis, following the graduation from simple to more complex situations of successful cases.
