Description and Objectives:
This Ph.D. seminar introduces students to quantitative research methods that are commonly used for the collection and analysis of social scientific data sets. Students will learn how to distinguish between research paradigms and methods, formulate research questions, and collect and analyze basic quantitative data. The course covers the following topics:

  • Communication research traditions and their approaches to empirical inquiry
  • Formulating quantitative research questions and hypotheses
  • Research designs commonly used in quantitative investigations
  • Methods of quantitative data collection
  • Statistics and the research process
  • Descriptive statistics
  • Assessing measures
  • Testing for relationships
  • Testing for group differences
  • Writing up and presenting quantitative data

The course will provide students with the fundamental skills to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of various data-analytical objectives and techniques
  • Critically consume empirical research findings presented in scholarly journals
  • Assess the appropriateness of various data-analytical techniques in response to questions asked by communication researchers
  • Select appropriate data-analytical strategies based on certain variables of interest
