Description

The period following WWII was an amazingly productive one in the visual arts, both in the United States of America and Germany, which was then a divided country, with a wall running through its middle from 1961 until 1989. The shadows of the horrors of the recent past as well as the ever present confrontations of the so-called “Cold War” could be experienced nowhere more acutely, disturbingly and therefore more creatively than at the centre Europe then divided by the “Iron Curtain”. The seminar will look in some detail at the artistic situation of New York and Düsseldorf, in order to reveal some of the artistic correspondences between these two extraordinary environments. Amongst the artists we will look at on the one side of the Atlantic will be Boris Lurie, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Richard Serra and Andy Warhol and Joseph Beuys, Rainer Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer, Sigmar Polke and Gerhard Richter on the other.
