Description

The course intends to critically retrace the phases of urban development in South and Central America, from Iberian colonization to the present, to then concentrate on the analysis of case studies of contemporary urban policies and models in the various cities considered. The basic thesis is that the cycle of Latin American urbanization should be interpreted in the long run on a global scale: from Iberian globalization to contemporary globalization. The course is divided into three modules: 1. Historical models of the city (from the 16th to the 18th century); 2. The 19th- and 20th-century transformations; 3. The contemporary metropolis: urban fragmentation, participation and the right to the city. Examples and case studies: Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Salvador de Bahia, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Lima, Quito, Santiago de Chile, Caracas (non-exhaustive list).
