Painter and sculptor, designer and architect, dancer, creator of fabrics, publisher… Sophie Taeuber-Arp is still present in the field of contemporary creation, as shown by the artists and designers who relate to her work. Her multidisciplinary approach is also highly stimulating to those who study architecture. It should not be forgotten that from the mid-twenties until the early thirties, Taeuber-Arp worked on the commission for the famous Aubette complex in Strasbourg, a Gesamtkunstwerk, redesigning its interiors with Theo van Doesburg and Jean Arp. The course will interpret Taeuber-Arp’s achievement in the context of the twentieth century’s artistic avant-gardes together with her work as publisher of the magazine “plastique plastic”, in collaboration with Arp and Domela, considered a forum for abstractionism.
Objectives
Acquisire gli strumenti per sviluppare una riflessione critica sul ruolo svolto dall’artista poliedrica Sophie Taeuber-Arp. Studiarne le diverse attività per ricostruire il clima artistico e culturale delle avanguardie del XX secolo. Acquisire competenze per affrontare temi legati alla ricerca d'archivio e all'estimento di mostre con opere di Taeuber-Arp in chiave contemporanea. Sviluppare una piccola ricerca personale su un aspetto legato alla figura dell'artista.

Learning methods
Il corso si fonda su una serie di lezioni ex cathedra. Completano il programma una conferenza tenuta da un ospite esterno, un'esercitazione a gruppi su un tema legato al corso, una lezione seminario su alcuni testi fondamentali e una visita alla Fondazione Marguerite Arp a Locarno che consente di entrare in contatto con le opere originali dell'artista e con i documenti d'archivio conservati presso la Fondazione.
Examination information
L’esame è costituito da due parti. La prima consiste in una presentazione di una ricerca personale su un argomento correlato al corso; la seconda consiste nel riconoscere alcune immagini e rispondere ad alcune domande aperte.
