Ethics and Religions

Description

The course aims at analyzing the relationship between religious faith and ethics, on the horizon of the question 'if and how' God is necessary for morality. In its articulations, the theme is approached from the idea that today we are in a time of a return of religion and of a newfound centrality of ethics. Beyond any contrast between faith and reason, between religion and morality, the discourse is elaborated with the help of the categories of practical reason and the necessity of the argumentative approach, in view of shared ethics in the complex and pluralistic society of our days.

Objectives

  • It is hoped that the student will be able to become acquainted with the issues presented, both through an in-depth historical study and with a specific systematic sensitivity.
  • The student should be encouraged to take a critical view of the relationship between religion and ethics, in order to balance resistance to religious sensibility on the one hand and falls into fundamentalism on the other.
  • Since we live in a complex and pluralistic society, the rational elaboration of moral discourses is the condition for finding a common ground for coexistence. The ability to use 'good reasons' produces tolerance in terms of both communication and moral conduct.
