Description
The course, conceived partly in the form of theoretical lectures on spatial planning (or spatial development) and partly of seminars and practical work, is given in a perspective of research applied to design in keeping with the rules that regulate areas with municipal planning permission. The objective is to gain familiarity with the basic tools of contemporary management of the territory (and the city), through the knowledge of local, regional and national planning institutions and the use of the tools of spatial data management (SDM).
Objectives
This course pursues two objectives:
a) To be able to interpret and use urban planning instruments;
b) To acquire basic skills in geographic information systems (GIS) as a decision-making tool for urban planning purposes.

Examination information
Each student, in addition to attending theoretical courses, have to participate in the completion of a group project, which consists of a territorial development plan (in the building zones of the municipalities of the Canton of Ticino) that takes into account the local urban planning regulations. The project involves the active use of GIS technologies.
