Project: Various Typologies

In the autumn semester, four design studios (Arnaboldi, Bonnet, Collomb, Nunes-Gomes) will share the same project area: Lugano from Val Veleggio to Val Cassarate with the Carona-Morcote peninsula. Each will work on an independent theme and programme, while sharing the cartographic and iconographic material, theoretical lectures and some critiques. Lugano “Città” itself faces the eastern side of its eponymous lake. However, for some time its urban life has been expanding in both the Cassarate and Vedeggio valleys. Lugano should be seen as a large and complex urban system, where the western valley actually brings together most of the metropolitan issues. We will take into consideration this figure of twin valleys, focusing on the two bays, fringes between built land and the powerful natural feature of the water. Starting from the interpretation of this figure understood as major parts of a larger metropolitan park system, we will imagine the transformations of each sequence.
