Description

The course centres on architectural production and its relationship with figurative art in the Mediterranean and transalpine regions from late antiquity down to the fourteenth century (4th-14th centuries). Over this broad time span, the transformations of the formal and typological languages of monuments are analysed, both in their historical context and in terms of the functional aspect of religion and political-social representation. The focal topics will be: strategies of the modulation of light in the sacred space, the interpretation of the ancient models, the role of the architect, the relationship between tradition and innovation and the reception of medieval art in the modern period.
