Description
Today wood is regaining market shares lost in the past to other materials like steel and concrete. The course will explain the reasons for this return and the physical and mechanical properties of “modern” timber, a natural yet industrialized material. It will then present its construction typologies, the principles of dimensioning of the elements and their methods of connection, the principles of protecting timber structures in the event of fire and earthquake and the construction measures to improve the durability of structures, as well as numerous examples, particularly factories and multi-storey buildings. Students will be required to analyse an an existing building with a timber structure, which they will present with a paper and an oral exposition.
