Structures in Architecture

Description

The purpose of a building’s load-bearing structure is not just to support loads and resist forces: its presence also defines space, voids and solids, light and shade. As such, it is therefore a generator of architecture. During the course several more or less recent examples will be discussed to show the importance of a dialogue between engineer and architect in designing a work where the structure and architecture act in sync. In analysing the structure of a recent building, the students will study in particular the load-bearing elements that transfer the loads to the foundations. Finally they will directly explore the ability of the structure to generate architecture by making a scale model of the chosen load-bearing element.
