Description

History, conservation and reuse Architects of the 21st century often lack the tools to read and appreciate the architectural qualities of modern interior space, which are also crucial to interior design today. Thus modern interior space, characterized by the coexistence of cultural values and factual properties, struggles to be considered as an object of conservation. The course provides the theoretical and critical tools to understand modern interiors across the full range of their material features (genre, type, distribution, spatial qualities, furniture, colour, technical devices) and their intangible values (use and function in their symbolic and cultural aspects). The selected case studies, as well as the course exercise, guide students in reading and devising intervention strategies and solutions that are coherent with a given interior (feasibility studies for compatible uses, public interiors compared with the evolution of uses, museification).
