Project: Various Typologies

The semester proposes a reflection over Metaxourgeio and Kerameikos, two neighbourhoods of Athens that, by the means of their strong centrality and of the presence of many voids within a generally consolidated urban tissue, own a considerable potential for urban transformations. With a series of punctual interventions, always in relationship with each other, the atelier aims to introduce a strong functional mixité, both in the residential and in the working fields. These new interventions shall value the existing public spaces network and preserve the peculiar spatial, cultural and social complexities of these areas. Understanding the city urban structure, its particular formative process and the spatial and functional organization of the “polykatoikia” – the typical Greek apartment building – represents therefore an important part of the design task, with the aim of developing effective and believable solutions for this place.
