Description

The course aims to analyse and explain the link between historical events, location and morphology of urban settlements in Alpine areas by proposing a long-term analysis (from the 12th to the 19th century) of economic structures, settlement and property characteristics, and forms of power developed locally. The course examines some relevant regions of the Alpine arc and the cities located there. It will also analyse some cities located near the Alps. From the largest and most populous lowland cities, Alpine towns received economic, political and cultural stimuli. These exchanges, until the 19th century, were intense and complex, and disprove an idea of the Alps as a secluded world, mysterious and largely unknown to the inhabitants of the plains.
