Description

The course offers an introduction to Gothic art and architecture in Europe from the 12th to 14th centuries, and its reception in the following centuries. The starting point will be the study of French monuments such as the abbey of Saint-Denis, the great cathedrals of Chartres, Reims and Amiens, and the court chapel of Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. The second phase will investigate how the formal Gothic language was interpreted in Italy, Germany and England; it will examine the salient phases of reception/revival to date and explore the reasons for the recovery of the Gothic style in different periods and historical contexts.
