Description

Our studio will reflect on the study of Professor Sascha Roesler, “Habitat Marocain”, a project made by two young Swiss architects - Jean Hentsch and André Studer in the early 1950s.
First, the project will be discussed in relation to the context and the time in which it was built, understanding the different aspects of modernism in Europe and Africa. We will then discuss its transformation by its users, the flexibility of the project, and during the second semester, propose a social housing project on the same site.
As said by S.Roesler “Habitat Marocain can only be properly understood in terms of the dynamics between formal and informal building”. Another aspect of this research and intervention will be to engage with the concept of “urban climate as artificial climate and as an overlapping zone of outside and inside conditions”.
Both semesters we will be based in Morocco. In the first semester we will visit the gta Archive, ETH Zürich to view material from the exhibition “Habitat Marocain as a Model” and make a study trip to the site.

Objectives

Declinate the reflection on domestic living, both individual and collective, with great attention to the context with which it relates.
Investigate the potential of undefined spaces for living, free to change and adapt to human needs, in a respectful coexistence with the context.
Work on transitional spaces and left over spaces, reflecting on the importance of leaving the space free and flexible for the users and for the entire community of interest.
Giving care to public and semipublic spaces in every step of the design process, for both semester.

Learning methods

Weekly reviews with professor and assistants. Group and individual research will alternate during the process. The atelier supports independent research through weekly feedbacks.

Examination information

Drawings and models hand-in. Constant presence during the semester. Final presentations and reviews.
