Biography

Illia Horenko is a full professor in the faculty of informatics at the USI Lugano. He received a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the Free University (FU) of Berlin in 2004 and spent several years as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Biocomputing Group and Climate Research Group at the FU Berlin, before joining the faculty of mathematics and computer science of the FU Berlin as an assistant professor in 2008.

His research interests are focussed on the development and practical implementation of data analysis algorithms, inverse methods and time series analysis approaches. Application areas for the developed methods are problems from climate/weather research, computational finance and econometrics, biophysics, computational fluid mechanics, sociology and politology. Special emphasis is done on data-based investigation of socio-economical and climate-related processes. Prof. Horenko has published over 50 papers in the professional literature. He was an organizer of several big programs on mathematical and computational aspects of scientific computing (Oberwolfach programs in 2008 and in 2016) and climate research (IPAM program at the UCLA in 2010) and is a frequent reviewer for international funding agencies and the top journals in his field.
