Biography

Antonio Calafati, an economist by education, is currently Adjunct Professor of Urban Studies at the Academy of Architecture, USI.

Since the early 1980s he has carried out research and consulting activities from an interdisciplinary perspective in the fields of urban and regional development, strategic planning for cities and towns, public investment evaluation. In recent years he has written - or contributed to – policy reports among others for the Italian Central Administration, the European Commission, the European Investment Bank and the OECD.

From 2013 to 2016 he coordinated the International Doctoral Programme in Urban Studies of the Gran Sasso Science Institute (L’Aquila). From 1981 to 2013 he taught at the Faculty of Economics "Giorgio Fuà" (Ancona, Italy), where he studied and consolidated his interdisciplinary perspective. He held teaching appointments at the University of Macerata (1992-1995) and the “Friedrich Schiller” University of Jena, Germany (2000-2009).

He accomplished long research stays at the St. Antony's College (Oxford), the University of Freiburg (Germany) and the Max-Planck Institute of Economics (Jena, Germany).

He edited Città tra sviluppo e declino. Un agenda urbana per l’Italia [Development and Decline in Cities. An Urban Agenda for Italy] (Rome 2014) and Le città della Terza Italia: struttura e prestazioni  [Third Italy’s Cities: Structure and Performances] (Milan 2011). He also published Economie in cerca di città. La questione urbana in Italia  [Economies in Search of Cities. The Italian Urban Question] (Rome 2009) and (with F. Mazzoni) Città in nuce nelle Marche [Cities in nuce in the Marche Region] (Milan 2008).
