The Relationship of Health Literacy and the Utilization of the Swiss Health Care System – A Study of Patients with Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is one of the fastest spreading chronic diseases in the developed world and consequently posing major challenges to health care systems. Diabetes is a disease, which requires extensive self-management skills in order to adhere to medication and dietary guidelines. Studies have shown that the level of health literacy has a major impact on how diabetes patients handle their disease, and that patients with limited health literacy tend to have worse glycemic control than patients with higher health literacy levels.
The project aims at investigating the association between diabetes patients’ health literacy and their utilization of the health care system across three different language regions in Switzerland.
