Project II: Atelier Mandrup
People
Description
The island of Bornholm, located in the Baltic Sea, is renowned for its captivating granite quarries, bearing witness to a long history of extraction and utilisation of this natural stone. Granite, an igneous rock formed through a slow cooling process of magma, has proven to be an exceptionally durable and appealing material for many applications. For centuries, the granite quarries on the island of Bornholm have provided a valuable resource for the construction of local and international buildings, roads, and monuments.
Objectives
During this semester we want to analyse ways of construction in synergy with the surroundings and the environment, with the peculiar condition of Bornholm and its environmental phenomena (humidity, water, seasonality, air movement, light, shadows...), trying to find techniques and ways of building that promote a cultural action in making architecture in empathy with the resources and manifest themselves as a mediation between knowledge and innovation.
The design task for this semester will be a 3000 m2 public facility located in a granite quarry on the island of Bornholm using resources and materials from the island.
