Description
The building processes of today’s architecture are among humans’ most contaminating activities. How can architects and engineers help change this? In this workshop, we introduce the topic of earthen construction enhanced with digital fabrication. Focusing on a real-world construction project, we aim to investigate the importance of architects and engineers in helping initiate the change towards a more sustainable future. This year we explore the potential to build structures for human-nonhuman cohabitation from 3D-printed clay modules. The Winter School is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Mendrisio Academy, the ZHAW Centre for Building Technologies and Processes, and selected industry partners.
Objectives
Students will benefit from insights into ongoing research projects on new sustainable construction methods
Teaching mode
In presence
Learning methods
Students will benefit from insights into ongoing research projects on new sustainable construction methods and advance their knowledge of computational design methods, digital fabrication processes, and alternative construction materials. The hands-on design and building workshop will be supplemented through input lectures, seminars, and discussions with bio-science and construction experts.
Examination information
Final presentation and physical prototype of the design proposal
