Description
The course is an introduction to the knowledge of some fundamental figures of the modern city: from the Garden City to Haussmann’s Paris, from the Ville Radieuse to the American city. Each individual case will illustrate an urban model, a social and productive organization and a cultural figure who has nurtured the collective imagination. At the same time the course will discuss the most important essays devoted to the metropolis in question, so providing an initial conceptual map as a guide to the critique of modern and contemporary urban space.
Objectives
The lessons aim to provide students with a clear and multifaceted experience of some essential figures of modern urban history: an initial repertoire of concepts and images necessary for the formation of an architectural culture.
