Description
The course discusses the main typologies of Roman structures (spectacle architecture, funerary architecture, cultic architecture, etc.) in their cultural and historical context. Along with the role played by architecture in Rome’s civilising mission, which represents the main concern of the course, the anthropological dimension of ancient Roman architecture will be explored. Generic notions regarding the ancient world, with focus on Roman culture are given, with the course functioning as both introduction to Roman antiquity and detailed analysis of the functions of official and private buildings. If the students' schedule will allow it, a trip to Pompeii or Rome will be organised towards the end of the course.
Objectives
To introduce the topic of Roman architecture to the student with an emphasis on the political and anthropological dimension of the built space
