Emerging topics in advanced computing
People
Description
PhD students are required to propose a scholarly publication (potentially their own work) that addresses pertinent computational challenges in the aforementioned fields. The course instructors will review the proposals to determine their eligibility. Once accepted, students must present their paper in class.
Objectives
This course is exclusively available for PhD students from the Faculty of Informatics, and focuses on current and emerging challenges in advanced computing. It is designed to foster in-depth understanding and critical analysis of computing challenges in data science, simulations, statistics, high-performance computing (HPC), and machine learning. The course offers an opportunity for PhD students to delve into advanced computational topics, enhance their presentation skills, and engage in scholarly discussions with researchers and faculty members from the Institute of Computing (CI).
Teaching mode

Learning methods
- Publication proposal: Students must submit a publication relevant to computational challenges in data science, simulations, statistics, HPC, or machine learning to the course instructors for approval, and highlight the computational challenges that their presentation will focus on.
- In-class presentation: Accepted proposals will require students to perform a 30-minute presentation of the paper in class, followed by an open-ended Q&A session.
- Evaluation: The final grade will be based on the quality of the presentation and the active participation in class discussions.
Examination information
The final grade is based on the presentation and class participation.
