Dimitris Serafis

My research has a strong interdisciplinary orientation, drawing on Critical Discourse Studies, Argumentation Studies, Social Semiotics and Multimodality with my particular focus being on topics such as migration, racism and hate speech, populism and authoritarianism, and communication in contexts of crisis. 

Since September 2022, I am a Swiss National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Research project: "Un.H.A.T.E.-R.G. - Unveiling Hatred discourses and Argumentation in The European public sphere-Return Grant), affiliated with the USI - Università della Svizzera italiana (Institute of Argumentation, Linguistics and Semiotics) and Adjunct Lecturer at the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences (Athens Greece). From 2020-2022 I was a Swiss National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Reseach Fellow (Research project: "Un.H.A.T.E. - Unveiling Hatred discourses and Argumentation in The European public sphere) affilitated with the University of Malta (Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology) and the University of Liverpool, UK (Department of Communication and Media) as well as Adjunct Lecturer at USI - Università della Svizzera italiana. From 2018-2020 I was a Visiting Postdoctoral Researcher (Fellow of the Sophie Afenduli Foundation), affiliated with the Institute of Argumentation, Linguistics and Semiotics, USI - Università della Svizzera italiana. 

I hold a PhD (cotutelle) in Social Sciences and Humanities from the University of Neuchatel (Switzerland) and the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences (Greece), which I was awarded in 2017 (summa cum laude). My research appears in journals such as Discourse & Communication, Critical Discourse Studies, Journal of Language and Politics, Topoi, Informal Logic, Journal of Argumentation in Context, Text & Talk, Social Semiotics and Journal of Language and Discrimination. My recent publications include the monograph "Authoritarianism on the Front page: Multimodal discourse and argumentation in times of multiple crises in Greece" (John Benjamins, 2023) and the thematic section "Critical perspectives on migration in discourse and communication" (Studies in Communication Sciences, 2021; co-edited with Jolanta Drzewiecka & Sara Greco).
