Biografia

Architect since 1977, living and working in Lisbon.

He lectured at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon between 1977 and 1992 and between 2014 and 2019; at the Autónoma University of Lisbon between 2001 and 2010; at the University of Évora between 2005 and 2013; at the University of Navarra between 2005 and 2015; at Cornell University, New York, in 2015;  at the Haute École du Paysage, d'Ingénierie et d'Architecture of Genève, in 2019-2020. Currently, he is visiting professor at the Leon Battista Alberti Unesco Chair in the Mantova Campus of the Politecnico di Milan. Has also been invited to hold lectures worldwide.

He has been awarded with various prizes and distinctions such as the International Association of Art Critics Award (1992), Secil Architecture Prize, Portugal (1994), Valmor Award, Portugal (1998, 2008, 2010, 2017), FAD Award, Spain (1999), Order of Merit of The Portuguese Republic (1999), Biennial International Award of Light – Luzboa (2004), Pessoa Award, Portugal (2008), Piranesi Award - Prix De Rome (2010), Knight of The Order of Arts and Letters of The French Republic (2010), Medal of the Académie d'Architecture, Paris, France (2012), International Award For Sacred Architecture - Frate-Sole (2012), Ibero-American Biennial Prize for Architecture and Urbanism (2012), Annual Award Architecture Acquisition by the National Academy of Fine Arts, Portugal (2014), International Fellowship of the Royal Institute of British Architects (2015), Honorary Member of the Order of Architects, Portugal (2015), The Buenos Aires International Biennial Architecture Prize (2018), Leon Battista Alberti Prize from the Politecnico di Milano, Mantova Campus (2018), arpafil Award, Guadalajara, Mexico (2018), Order of Public Instruction of the Portuguese Republic (2019).

Nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture Mies van der Rohe Award on several years.

Participated in the Portuguese official representation to the 12th, 13th and 16th Venice Architecture Biennales and on the main exhibition of the 15th Biennale.

João Luís Carrilho da Graça was awarded the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa by the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon.
