Diego Pizzagalli

Researcher at IRB and ICS.

My research interests focus on combining biomedical data with computational methods. I like not-in-fashion algorithms and their practical applications in the biomedical field.

In my doctoral studies, supported by Systemsx.ch - the Swiss initiative in system biology - I combined microscopy observations of the immune system, with graph-based algorithms to unravel novel mechanisms of the immune system.

Previous studies combined
- Electrocardiographic signals (ECG) and machine learning for the automatic detection of arrythmic and ischemic events (MSc thesis at Politecnico di Milano).
- Near infrared sensors (NIR) and ubiquitous computing for decreasing the mortality associated with the sudden infant death sindrome (SIDS).
- Low-cost sensors, ubiquitous computing and machine learning for improving the posture of office workers (Hack the City competition - Lugano).
- Social networks and real-time data mining for the monitoring of flu outbreaks.

I also work as Teaching Assistant at the faculty of informatics where I have co-founded the USI Makers association https://usimakers.github.io/
