Dr. Balachandran is a senior postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Management and Organization, Faculty of Economics. He obtained PhD in Economics, specializing in Organization Theory, from USI in 2015. Before this appointment, he held fellowships at the Institute for Analytical Sociology (Linköping University, Sweden), Institute for Futures Studies (Stockholm) and the Chair of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, Utrecht University School of Economics (the Netherlands).
At Linköping University, he served as the course director for an inter-disciplinary Bachelors course on Entrepreneurship and Business Development. He also taught Strategic Management, International Business and Entrepreneurship to Master's students during 2016-2018.
Dr. Balachandran is a member of the Swedish Initiative for Research on Microdata in the Social and Medical Sciences (SIMSAM) and a contact person for matters related to Swedish company (FTG & FAD) and employment registers (LISA) as part of SIMSEG research program on School Segregation.
Dr Balachandran’s main research interests are mobility (e.g., job, inter-firm, career, upward, geographic), inequality (e.g., intra-firm wages, promotions, opportunity) and diversity(e.g., TMT, BoD, workforce). He is also interested in studying how organisations and entrepreneurial ventures shape and is shaped by transformative changes in labour market. He conducts quantitative analysis on large scale micro-data from Swedish population registers (LISA) and firm dynamics (FAD, FTG) to answer these questions. Previously, he investigated some of these issues using historical data on the Dutch accounting industry.
His publications have appeared in Organization Science, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Advances in Strategic Management and Higher Education Policy.
