Abstract
The question of how knowledge is phrased, qualified and negotiated among speakers has been debated in linguistics, language typology, pragmatics, conversation analysis, and interactional linguistics. The editorial to the virtual special issue starts by providing an overview of the field of epistemicity and of the study of epistemic and evidential markers in talk-in-interaction. It then focuses on the relationship of those markers with the expression and negotiation of disagreement. Three main avenues of research are highlighted: (i) How do evidential and epistemic markers contribute to the modulation of disagreeing actions, (ii) how do they contribute to the formation of such disagreeing actions, and (iii) how do they vary depending on structural and relational characteristics of discourse genres and situation types? The editorial closes with an outline of the virtual special issue, including a summary of all contributions.
