Biography

Since 2021 Andrea Balbo (1970) is full professor in Latin Language and Literature at the Department of Humanist Studies of the University of Turin; previously he was assiastant professor (2010-2019) and associate professor (2019-2021),. After Graduating, in 1994, in Latin Literature under the supervision of Italo Lana, he was doctoral student in Greek and Latin Philology and Literature (1999) and from 1999 till 2004, he has taught Italian, Latin, Greek, History and Geography in private secondary schools and subsequently, after passing the competitive examination to become qualified teacher, at Italian state schools. Between 2004 and 2010, he was postdoctoral student at the Universities of Turin and of the Eastern Piedmont, where he lectured Latin Language and Classical Philology. He taught Didactics of Latin Language and Literature at the Inter-university Specialization School for the Formation of Secondary School Teachers (S.I.S.), Piedmont, until its abolition. He coordinated the category A051 (Italian and Latin) of the teacher qualification courses ex lege 143/2004. He is a member of the CIFIS (Inter-university Centre for the Formation of Secondary School Teachers), where he is responsible for the Teacher Training in Literature, and is active as a lecturer in Didactics of Latin Literature.

He participates in the following national and international research projects: DigilibLt (Digital Library of Late Antique Latin Texts), director Prof. R. Tabacco; Cultural heritage of antiquity and its influence from Piedmont of Risorgimento to Europe, from the middle of the nineteenth century to 1961, a project of the University of Turin (Coordinator Prof. G. Guidorizzi).

He was Visiting Professor at the Seoul National University in 2011. He is a member of CUSL (Consulta Universitaria di Studi Latini), SIAC (The International Society of Cicero's Friends), ISHR (International Society for the History of Rhetoric), AICC (Associazione italiana di cultura classica). He is responsible for various Erasmus exchanges. He is Editor in Chief of the Gazette Tulliana (ISSN 2102-653X), the official bulletin of the SIAC (www.tulliana.eu). Starting with issue 47, 2012, he is member of the Editorial Board of the «Journal of Greco-Roman Studies» (ISSN 1225-1828) published by the Korean Society for Greco-Roman Studies (Seoul - Korea). He has editorial commitments in the following journals: member of the scientific committee of «Studia Oliveriana»; member of the scientific committee of Nuova Secondaria (http://nuovasecondaria.lascuolaconvoi.it/); member of the revisers committee of «EL.LE, Educazione Linguistica / Language Education» (http://edizionicf.unive.it/index.php/ELLE/index; I SSN: 2280-6792).

His research interests cover Roman rhetoric of the Imperial period, the relationship between classical rhetoric and jurisprudence, various authors such as Seneca and Tacitus, the presence of Greek and Latin authors in modern literatures, the history of classical philology, the didactics of classical languages with particular emphasis on multimedia applications. In regard

to the latter, he participated in numerous school volumes on Latin literature for the publishers Petrini and De Agostini e he collaborates actively with the publishers Zanichelli, Paideia and La Scuola. He has written three monographs (one on the didactics of Latin and two on Imperial period rhetoric), more than 50 articles and scientific contributions in Italian, English and French, and numerous reviews.
