Development of bionic current sensors for hydrodynamic measurement systems modelled on the lateral line organ of fish

The aim of this project is to design and build current sensors for fluids and gasses. They will be modelled on the mechanical sensors of the lateral line organ of aquatic organisms like fish. These organs allow the organism to sense local water movement, even if it is very weak. By sensing these movements, aquatic organisms are for example able to localise moving and fixed objects in their surroundings. Some species use the lateral line organs to seek out turbulent areas in bodies of flowing water to save energy in locomotion.The project consists of four parts. The first part is the analysis of the lateral line organs of fish. The second part will be the development of artificial current sensors using microsystem electronics. To better estimate the dimensioning of these artificial sensors, mathematical modelling and simulations will be implemented as the third part of this project. The last part will be the construction and testing of an artificial lateral line organ.The ICS will be concerned with the modelling and simulation of the sensors. It is planned to model several different designs of sensors to determine the most promising geometry and dimensions of an actual physical model. The simulations will serve to explore the boundaries of the respective designs in both the mechanical and electrical sense.
