Description

The course will convey a basic knowledge and understanding of sustainable and integrative thinking and acting in architecture: its reasons, fundamentals, and principles and their application in architecture and design. Alternating between theoretical classes, guest lectures by international practitioners and researchers, excursions, and practical assignments, we will establish a connection with the work in the design studios by focusing also on housing: working in groups, students will be asked to analyse and improve their current living conditions, proposing new ways of living together and making their homes, and their use of them, more sustainable.
As a final task, we will ask each student to define their personal attitude and position in the open field of sustainable design by developing their own "Do-it-Yourself Certification System" - a personal value system to measure their own design projects in terms of sustainable and integrative thinking.

Objectives

The goal of the course is to help students be conscious and responsible in their design projects: to achieve the maximum positive impact on society with the minimum negative impact on the environment.
