Description

An industrial facility is a machine whose form is a direct response to functional logic. Its raw beauty and unique character make it a poetic vector. With few architectural interventions, it can be transformed into a true monument without compromising its function.

Industrial sites such as waste incineration plants are often self-contained, disconnected from society. Opening them to the public and bringing them back in the city not only helps to make better use of underutilized spaces in the face of growing demographic and territorial pressure, but above all, it makes it possible to recenter functions that have traditionally been relegated to the periphery. The site thereby takes on an educational role, raising awareness about the ecological impacts of our society.

Students will develop a waste treatment facility project in the context of Naples. They will define a complementary program capable of activating a site of their choice. Issues of space, structure, architectural expression, and contextual integration will be central to the course.

Objectives

Working in pairs, students will develop a waste treatment facility. They will define a complementary program to be implemented on a site of their choice. They will need to understand the logic of the industrial process and integrate it into a coherent architectural project located in Naples. Urban integration and the ability to create a place in dialogue with the city will be a central focus of the studio. At the building scale, logistics management, structural design, and architectural expression will form the core of the discussions.
