Description

This joint-studio has the impetus to reconsider how contemporary housing in Kyoto could be conceived. Students from AAM and KIT will collaborate together in pairs: exploring, sharing, and reflecting upon their diverse heritage. We will analyse the status quo of current Japanese ways of building: What are its sociological, economic, and ecological advantages and drawbacks? Why has the Japanese dwelling become increasingly analogous to its Western counterpart? Could one reinstill a specificity by reinvestigating the basic typological measures which were originally born out of the unique climatic and cultural aspects of the place? Through dialogue with professors and students from Japan, we hope this experience can provide a lens with which to critically and appropriately engage within any location.
