Description
Thinking through drawing: in COHA 'BIT The intervention area is located in the vicinity of a granitic escarpment (‘a quarried area’) in the heart of the city of Oporto: the challenge is to explore forces ‘moving in opposite directions”: the consolidated and the fragmented urban tissue; locals and migrants; heritage and infrastructure; public and private; high and low grounds; monumentality and domestic scale; continuity and rupture… Students are invited to think architecture in an urban context where the local community cohabits with the migrant community (India and Bangladesh), and the latter has shaped a precarious space with the function of a mosque/community space, emerging in an impromptu structure, temporary, and unsafe. The challenge is to design a new mosque for the existing community, connecting it with its surroundings and overcoming, through drawing, the character of an urban void that it now represents.
