Description

After the first semester's design of a small space, the second will involve the design of a collective housing building. The first step in this exploration is the redrawing or analysis of significant architectures and housing references, usually around thirty, which are added to a catalogue of now over 300 drawings, an archive that is always available to students who wish to study or explore the themes in greater depth. This well-established practice makes it possible to acquire in a short time the first design tools related to this new theme, such as distributional and structural characteristics, the spatial qualities of flats and vertical connections.

The site of the collective housing project will be in Istanbul, where we will make our atelier trip. We will explore the historical relationship between the city of the first semester, Venice, and ancient Constantinople, through Byzantine culture, the Republic and the Ottoman Empire. In the Turkish city we will explore cultural, infrastructural and architectural constructions of great importance and try to work with the theme of water at the urban scale.

At the beginning of the semester, a one-day visit to Milan will be organised, taking us each time to discover landmarks realised by great post-war Italian architects.

The semester will be accompanied by lectures by the lecturers, who will explore topics related to the semester, the site and the type of project from time to time.

Objectives

The ambition of the course is to broaden and consolidate the students' architectural awareness, in particular related to the theme of domestic space, providing them with those architectural tools necessary for the continuation of their studies and future professional practice. The method employed is based on the well-established principles of the Construction of the Idea, through the use of curiosity, passion and self-critical capacity.

Sustainable development goals

  • Sustainable cities and communities
  • Responsible consumption and production

Learning methods

The method of the atelier is based on the process of the Construction of the Idea,  which is the formulation of an architectural idea only after a careful and conscious process that starts from an initial intuition and goes through moments of cultural, tectonic and interdisciplinary reflection.

From a methodological point of view, the construction of an idea cannot be defined scientifically and pragmatically, as it is always strongly influenced by individuality, i.e. by processes that make a systematic or dogmatic classification difficult. This does not mean being allowed to be arbitrary. On the contrary, the process of constructing the idea obliges us to translate intuition through a process of research into its origin and motives, keeping in mind a precise system of cultural values that are also and above all the object of our teaching.

The tools needed to approach this methodology and that the atelier seeks to transmit to students are curiosity, passion and a certain degree of self-criticism.
