Description

The title of Atelier Arrhov semesters 2021/ 2022 asked a question; How simple can we build ? How simple can we live ? The atelier structure is an open process in which every week a new chapter. Words from the notebook acted as interferences to the first question, enabling unexpected discoveries. These notes on specific conditions, exploring different facets: investigating local ecosystems, surveying everyday life, calculating a structure, rese- arching material costs, observing situations and traditions. A weekly disruption as an opportunity to explore each topic from a different perspective, challenging the linear design procedure. Fragments slowly become architecture, chapter by chapter. Within this open-ended process, there are no predetermined sites, programs, scales, topics. Nothing to lean against. The question 2024 will be discovered as a combined platform of research/ case studies, information and 1:1 prototypes. About building. About living. 

Objectives

This year our studio will take the opportunity to imagine the Teatro dell’architettura as a place to be experienced, combining research, practice, and pedagogy. The purpose is to use this opportunity and this space to explore built or ongoing projects together with collective research.
To enable the exhibition space to become a workshop, sometimes a prototype. To provide oxygen and natural light, while experiencing the interior and the exterior. Autumn 2024 will be an ongoing experiment in which materials and 1:1 prototypes will accumulate week after week. Public talks or workshops will be frequently held with guest speakers and experts in various fields. We will share aperitifs around a fire and hold open discussions. We acknowledge the unfinished aspect as a quality, eliciting questions to be pursued further. An autumn without a clear beginning or end. An invitation to the Academy, to the community. To open up the Teatro as a tool.

Learning methods

The atelier develops a wide variety of tools, as a way to experiment and discover different scales, disciplines. From hands-on workshops to theoretical research, the atelier process is intentionally exploratory, as a potential for each student and project to find its own tools. Questions are raised collectively in the atelier, and weekly discussions are supporting the process of developing the project.

Examination information

The examination methods value the process as much as the final result. Curiosity, autonomy, capacity to work together, within a team, are valued during the whole semester. The precision of the research, attention to drawings, models and the clarity of the projects will be valuable qualities.
