Art and Architecture of Renaissance and Baroque

The course offers an overview of European architecture, with a particular focus on Italian architecture, from the early fifteenth century to the mid-eighteenth century. In addition to the study of individual biographies (from Brunelleschi to Borromini), the course examines the evolution of the different building types proposed with the rediscovery of Antiquity in the humanistic age. Particular emphasis is placed on the relationship between architecture and the visual arts, on the changing social and cultural role of the artist-architect, and on the relationships with patrons.

Basic knowledge of the history of art and architecture from the 15th to the 17th century. An overview of the main protagonists and of the key theoretical and historiographical issues.
