Description

Venice’s uniqueness lies in its very structure and historical fabric as a city built on water. Over the centuries, its houses, streets, canals, and monumental buildings have evolved into an urban organism that is both unique and fragile, long affected by the pressures of overtourism on the one hand and depopulation on the other. Through the study of a series of emblematic case studies—from the continuous restoration campaigns of St. Mark’s Basilica and Carlo Scarpa’s museum interventions to more recent adaptive reuse projects such as Punta della Dogana—the Summer School aims to explore the dialectical relationship between adaptive reuse and restoration. This relationship will be examined from a long-term historical perspective and in terms of its productive potential for contemporary architectural design.

Learning methods

Through site visits conducted alongside scholars, designers, and restoration specialists, students will examine exemplary cases—ranging from adaptive reuse in medieval architecture to the restoration of medieval and Renaissance buildings, from museum conversions to the restoration of modern architecture, and including direct observation of active restoration sites. Using the tools of archaeological-architectural analysis, they will be encouraged to reflect on the relationship between the existing building and subsequent transformations, historical layering, the preservation of the work's materiality, and issues of sustainability, accessibility, and heritage management.
