Abstract

USI Institute of Public Health – Faculty of Biomedical Sciences – is carrying out an epidemiological study to accurately measure the occurrence and impact of dementia in Ticino.

The study is carried out in collaboration with the Canton (DSS), Pro Senectute Ticino, Alzheimer Schweiz, Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale (EOC), and the Cantonal Sociopsychiatric Organisation (OSC) and is part of the cantonal strategy for dementia. The aim is to assess the number of people affected by dementia (including Alzheimer), and the impact of the disease on patients, their families, the community and the Canton at large. Current evidence on both dementia prevalence and its impact in Ticino is virtually inexistent, and very sparse in the rest of our country as well.

Why this study

We need an epidemiological study to understand what can be done and how to improve the quality of life of those affected by dementia. Moreover, the tools that we will use in our study will also allow us to monitor progress we will make in the coming years.

What can you do to help with our study

The data and information we need can be collected only through an epidemiological study with a robust design. Firstly, we need a feasibility study to test our research methods and procedures.  Secondly, we will conduct a validation study to formally put our methods to test, and demonstrate their validity and reliability.

More information concerning the study and on how to participate are available at the following page.
