Abstract

The Contact Mechanics International Symposium is one of the two leading international conference series in the field of contact mechanics and the 2026 edition (CMIS 2026) will be held in Lugano, Switzerland. The conference is conceived as a focused, fully in-person event, characterized by a friendly and interactive atmosphere. It features no parallel sessions, and all scientific and social activities take place at a single venue. This format is specifically designed to promote intensive scientific exchange and meaningful interactions among all participants.

A central component of the scientific program is the participation of six invited plenary speakers, who are internationally recognized leaders in contact mechanics. Five of these plenary speakers are based outside Switzerland, including two from Europe and three from the United States. Their presence is essential to ensure the scientific excellence, international visibility, and overall impact of the conference.

Financial support is therefore crucial to enable their participation. In this context, support from the SNSF would play a key role in guaranteeing the high scientific quality and international standing of CMIS 2026, and would significantly contribute to the success of the conference.
