Abstract
In relation to the narratives of migratory experiences of literati such as Carlo Goldoni, Giuseppe (Joseph) Baretti or Lorenzo Da Ponte, scholars have often researched objective biographical data, tracing back the origin of cultural contacts or trying to quantify the extent of intellectual and artistic exchange. Adopting a slightly different approach, the paper focuses on a punctual moment in these ‘récits de migration’, be they elaborated in synchrony or through the filters of autobiographical memory. In fact, in spite of its subjective and apparently marginal nature, the momentum of departure and separation, of transition and entrance into cultural otherness (as well as the point of, even temporary, return) seems to constitute a decisive motif of narration, almost a topos, marking an existential and a narrative caesura, often both rhetorically and structurally emphasized.
