Abstract
This book examines the representation of sex and identity in the work of Rachilde (1860–1953), a major figure of Decadent aesthetics. Through a study of her fiction and critical writings, it highlights the central role of inversion, androgyny, and neutrality, which challenge conventional distinctions between masculine and feminine. Reflection on sexuality is closely linked to a questioning of writing itself, conceived as a space of identity transformation. At a time when women’s literary legitimacy remained uncertain, Rachilde’s work reveals a paradoxical construction of authorship, shaped by both gender transgression and the pursuit of recognition as a writer.
