Abstract
The relations between the web and history have been studied by three mostly separated subfields. First, the “History Web,” where the web is mainly taken as a platform to help historians in their daily work because of digitized sources, databases, and the creation of websites dealing with history. Second, the “Web History,” which mainly focuses on websites, the material and software dimension of the past web, and the archived web. Finally, the “History of the Web,” where the political, economic, technical, and cultural history of the web itself is at the center. This chapter aims to analyze the three subfields, to revise the most relevant scientific literature, and to discuss how and why to integrate them.
