Description

This seminar-based course explores advanced topics in NLP. At the start of the semester, selected topics and a list of research papers for each of these will be shared with the students. Students provide the lecturer with a list of preferences for topics and papers (journal articles, conference papers etc.) after which the lecturer determines the assignment for each student. Each students is expected to present one scientific work, and lead a discussion regrading the selected paper. All students will be responsible for reading each paper and contributing to the discussion of the paper's merits and weaknesses.  Possible topics are (but not limited to) multilingual NLP, cognitive aspects of NLP, including creativity, reasoning and argumentation.

Objectives

The main aim of this course is to give students a deeper understanding on a range of advanced topics in Natural Language Processing (NLP). By means of giving presentations and reading and discussing scientific works, students learn, in addition, to critically assess previous works, propose extensions of current methods, and identify avenues for future research.

Learning methods

Learning methods include reading research papers, listening to short lectures and presentations, taking part in discussions, and giving presentations.

Examination information

Students will be assessed based on the quality of their presentation, the depth of their knowledge regarding the topic of the presentation, their handling of questions, their participation in discussions related to topics presented by other students.
