Biography
Prof. Dr. med. Giacomo D. Simonetti is the medical and scientific director of the Pediatric Institute of Southern Switzerland (IPSI) and full professor of pediatrics at the Faculty of Biomedicine at the Università della Svizzera Italiana, Switzerland. He has been active as a chief physician at the Cantonal Hospital since 2014.
Grown-up in Ticino, he is married and the father of 2 daughters.
Prof. Dr. med. Giacomo D. Simonetti graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Bern in 1999. He worked as an assistant physician in the pediatric department at the Regional Hospital Bellinzona until 2001. He received training in pediatrics and pediatric nephrology at the University Children's Hospital of Bern and the University Children's Hospital of Heidelberg, Germany. In 2005, he obtained the FMH title of specialist in pediatrics, and in 2008, the subspecialty title in pediatric nephrology.
He is the author of numerous scientific publications. In 2009, he earned the habilitation (PD) from the University of Bern, and in 2012, he was appointed associate professor at the University of Bern.
From 2010 to 2014, he was head of the Pediatric Nephrology Unit at the University Children's Hospital of Bern.
Prof. Dr. med. Giacomo D. Simonetti's particular scientific and clinical interest is arterial hypertension in children together with its pharmacological therapy and cardiovascular complications (arterial stiffness), as well as in the field of pediatric nephrology and general pediatrics. Several scientific works have been awarded at national and international conferences, including the research prize from the Swiss Heart Foundation. He is very interested and dedicated to teaching and education, both in the clinic (bedside teaching) and at the University (frontal lectures).
He is an active member of numerous societies of pediatrics, pediatric nephrology, and arterial hypertension. At the national level, he is part of the expert group on pediatrics and medications for parliamentarians. He is a member of the accompaniment group for highly specialized medicine in the pediatric field (from 2025). At the international level, he is in the "core group" and the management committee of the HyperChildNet consortium (Cost Action), which deals with arterial hypertension in children.
