Biography

Massimo Filippini is Full Professor of Economics with a joint appointment at ETH Zurich and the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) since 1999. He is Director of the Centre for Energy Policy and Economics (CEPE) at ETH Zurich and a member of the Center for Economic Research (CER-ETH). He coordinates the international research network Empirical Methods in Energy Economics (EMEE) and serves on the Board of Country Representatives of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE). He previously served as President of the Swiss Association for Energy Economics (SAEE).

He studied economics at the University of Zurich, where he also earned his doctorate. He has held visiting appointments at several leading institutions as visiting scholar or visiting professor, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change), Harvard University (Kennedy School of Government and Department of Economics), the London School of Economics.

Professor Filippini’s research lies at the intersection of energy economics, applied econometrics, behavioral economics, and public economics. His work focuses on topics such as the economics of energy efficiency, empirical analysis of energy demand, energy and development, regulatory economics, and the assessment of energy policy instruments. He also specializes in analyzing the productivity and efficiency of firms.

He has published extensively, with more than 110 articles in peer-reviewed journals indexed in Scopus, as well as numerous books and book chapters. According to Google Scholar, his work has been cited over 12,000 times, and he holds an h-index of 57. In 2024, he co-authored an open-access textbook titled Introduction to Energy Economics and Policy (Cambridge University Press) with Suchita Srinivasan.

He serves on editorial boards of several international journals and is consistently ranked among the top 2% of European economists, according to IDEAS/RePEc.

Personal Background

Born and raised in Airolo, Switzerland, Professor Filippini maintains strong ties to the Alpine region. He was one of the founders of the Casa della Sostenibilità in Airolo, reflecting a long-standing personal commitment to sustainability and community-based environmental initiatives. An avid ski mountaineer, he also holds a federal snow sports instructor diploma from Swiss Snowsports. His close relationship with the mountain environment informs both his personal life and his academic interest in sustainable development and environmental education.
