Abstract
The proposed model curriculum for Research Data Management and Open Research Data practices for PhD students and junior researchers in social sciences (RDM@SSM) will integrate RDM/ORD training into the programme of the Summer School is Social Science Methods (SSM; https://www.usi.ch/methodssummerschool). The project bridges the gap in RDM education within social science PhD programmes in Switzerland by delivering specialised training in a format that complements existing SSM research methods courses.
The course will be delivered fully online over five days during the week preceding the current core 2-week period of the Summer School, during which workshops on specific methods for data collection and analysis are taught. Since the SSM currently enrols over 250 students (mostly PhDs), the integration within the SSM will provide access to a large potential public of PhD students for analysing user needs and testing of the course.
The majority of teaching will be delivered ‘live’ by a team of expert instructors, including staff members from partner institutions - Università della Svizzera italiana and FORS, and current Summer School instructors, as well as external experts such as ORD consultants and RDM specialists. Course materials, including text and video material, quizzes and exercises and additional resources will be shared with the participants via a dedicated interactive e-learning page using the iCorsi platform (accessible via the edu-ID log-in).
The course will be pre-tested in summer 2024; based on the assessment of results, it will be revised and finalised by the end of 2024 for regular delivery within the SSM in the following years; a suitable business model will also be developed. All course materials will also be made available on-line to all Swiss HEIs interested in using them, and targeted outreach measures will be organised, such as holding dedicated sessions for heads of social sciences doctoral programs and potential trainers from other universities.
