Abstract

The Doppio Sguardo. Riflessioni Visive project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), aims to highlight the discrepancy between the negative stigma associated with certain types of visuals (e.g., selfies) and the important social functions that these visual practices can have for maintaining and building positive interpersonal relationships. Through the temporary installation of two photographic exhibitions in Lugano (Villa Ciani) and Bellinzona (Palazzo Franscini), Doppio Sguardo targets both the general Ticino public and, in particular, the students and teachers of middle and high schools in the region. Thanks to an innovative approach, all the images on display, derived from a previous research project (ViRe), have been recreated using generative artificial intelligence. This procedure allowed for preserving the original compositional and aesthetic elements while anonymizing the individuals involved.

To foster critical reflection and visual education, promoting a deeper understanding and acceptance of contemporary photographic practices and the social norms connected to them, the project includes guided tours and educational activities. At the conclusion of the exhibitions, the creation of ad hoc educational toolkits, along with continuing education seminars, supports the development of visual communication skills for both educators and students.

Overall, thanks to the contributions of multidisciplinary experts, Doppio Sguardo initiates a dialogue on important social issues related to visual communication, actively involving the educational, social, and cultural sectors of the Ticino region. Finally, the use of scientific data collected in the area as part of the ViRe project, combined with the support of generative artificial intelligence, creates a bridge between the latest technological developments and everyday life themes that directly impact the population.

The Doppio Sguardo project relies on the collaboration of the Department of Education, Culture, and Sport (DECS) and the Bellinzona Cantonal Library, as well as the patronage of the City of Lugano and the City of Bellinzona.
