Biografia
Massimiliano Vatiero (Ph.D., University of Siena) has been a member of the Law Institute at the Università della Svizzera italiana (IDUSI) since 2010. From 2010 to 2018, he held the “Brenno Galli” Chair of Law and Economics at USI.
He currently holds a double academic affiliation, formally ratified by both the Senate of the University of Trento and the Senate of the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI Senate Appointment):
- Professore Associato of Political Economy, University of Trento, since 2021
- Professore Aggregato of Law and Economics, Università della Svizzera italiana, since 2022
His primary research interests include Law and Economics, Corporate Governance, and Institutional Economics. In 2014, he completed a research project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation titled “Institutional complementarities among corporate ownership, employment protection and innovation: The Swiss case” (project link).
He currently serves as the Principal Investigator of the DigitChart project (project link), funded by USI within the Open Science and ORD initiative.
Prof. Vatiero has held several international visiting appointments, including:
- Visiting Scholar, Chicago-Kent College of Law (Fall 2009)
- Visiting Assistant Professor, Institute of Law and Economics, Hamburg (Fall 2012)
- Visiting Researcher, Harvard Law School (Fall 2013 and Fall 2014), where he was also a Fellow in the Comparative Corporate Governance and Finance Program

Ricerca
Vatiero works mainly on law and economics, contract theory, corporate governance, and institutional economics.
Massimiliano Vatiero was visiting scholar at Chicago Kent College of Law for the Spring-term 2009, visiting assistant professor at the Institute of Law and Economics - Hamburg for the Fall-term 2012, visiting researcher at Harvard Law School for the the Fall-term 2013 and for the Fall-term 2014.
His publications have appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as Kyklos, Journal of Economic Surveys, Journal of Economics and Management Strategy, History of Political Economy, European Journal of Law and Economics, Journal of Institutional Economics, and Journal of Economic Issues; and in international volumes such as the Oxford Handbook of Corporate Law and Governance. In 2021, he published a book with Routledge (London, UK) titled The Theory of Transaction in Institutional Economics, focusing on the concept of transaction in the transaction cost economics.
